It’s like riding a bike!

As a drummer, I often get questions related to my craft. One that I often get is, “how do you remember all of the different drum parts for so many songs?” When you think about it, it seems like that might be a challenging task, but it’s really not any different than, let’s say, a cashier who remembers all of the different PLU codes for a long list of items, or a chef who remembers all of the ingredients and their ratios to a complete restaurant menu. It’s simply recall; your mind retrieving parts that were learned , or written previously. If I’m conscious of it, sometimes while I’m playing, I can tell that my mind is thinking about parts that are measures ahead of where I’m actually playing. In a way, preparing me for what’s ahead. Pre Production Process

Pre production for the next Sprung Monkey album has begun, and it’s a fairly involved process. It requires us to play the finished songs that will be on the album, over, and over, working out all the different parts and getting them as tight as possible. Having just gone through pre production, and recording for The Accident Experiment album, I’m already in mode to dissect each one of these songs! In a way, this is like the homework aspect of being a musician, and I always look forward to it! While most of the time I like to be exact on the parts I write, occasionally there are a couple of songs that require a small percentage of […]

Hip hop at Capricorn

I have a hip hop recording session today, and I gotta say that I’m very excited for it. I’ve been doing pop and rock sessions lately, so I’m definitely looking forward to mixing it up with a different style. There’s just something about that steady heavy groove that hip hop music provides! The recording is at Capricorn studios in downtown San Diego, which is becoming one of my favorite studios to record at lately. I’ve done a few sessions there, and always get great sounds. Being that it’s close to the heart of beautiful downtown San Diego, makes it appealing as well. I mean, Pokez Mexican restaurant is right next door, and I’m certainly not complaining about that! In fact, Smashburger, and The Kebab shop are just a few blocks away. Yeah, I know I sound like a foodie, but that’s because I am! […]
